Lake Baikal is the deepest and oldest lake on Earth. Located in southeastern Siberia, it reaches a maximum depth of 1,642 meters and is 25 million years old. It holds roughly 20% of the world’s unfrozen fresh water.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

In 1996, UNESCO declared Lake Baikal a World Heritage Site. The lake is home to more than 2,500 species, two-thirds found nowhere else. The most famous is the Baikal seal (nerpa).

Where Is Lake Baikal?

The nearest major city is Irkutsk (~620,000 people). Flights arrive from Moscow (5.5h), Beijing, Bangkok, and Seoul.
